R802 – Open abdominal aortic repair (tube graft or endarterectomy)
OHIP Radiology Code — CARDIOVASCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service is for the surgical repair or excision of an abdominal aortic aneurysm using a graft. The procedure can be for the aneurysm repair alone or may also include a unilateral common femoral artery repair. For cases involving a ruptured aneurysm, bilateral common femoral repair, or repair of an iliac artery aneurysm, see related codes E627, R817, and R877 respectively. For endovascular repair, see services on page .
When to Use
- Use R802 for elective open surgical repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm using a tube graft or endarterectomy.
- Use this code when the procedure is limited to the aorta or includes only a unilateral common femoral artery repair.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill R802 for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms, which require the use of E627 instead.
- Avoid using R802 for cases involving iliac artery aneurysm repair, as these are specifically covered under R877.
- Billing R802 for endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) will result in rejection; ensure these are billed under the appropriate codes found in section Q13.
Billing Tips
- Ensure that if a second assistant is required for this complex procedure, the service is billed separately as it is eligible for payment without prior authorization.
