R885Removal of peritoneal cannula by laparotomy or laparoscopy

OHIP Radiology Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Removal of peritoneal cannula by laparotomy or laparoscopy. This is a surgical procedure to remove the catheter used for peritoneal dialysis. Note: 1. E860 is not eligible for payment with R885, except in circumstances described in paragraph 23 of Surgical Preamble. 2. Z552, Z553 and S312 are not eligible for payment in association with R885.

When to Use

  • Use R885 when performing the surgical removal of a peritoneal dialysis catheter via a formal laparotomy incision.
  • Use R885 when the removal of the peritoneal cannula requires a laparoscopic approach to address adhesions or catheter tip entrapment.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing E860 (General anaesthetic) alongside R885 is a common rejection; ensure you only bill E860 if the specific criteria in paragraph 23 of the Surgical Preamble are met.
  • Attempting to bill Z552, Z553, or S312 in the same session will result in an automatic claim rejection due to the explicit restriction in the Schedule of Benefits.
  • Confusing R885 with R852; ensure the procedure was a formal surgical removal rather than a simple bedside extraction or exchange.

Billing Tips

  • Always verify if the procedure qualifies for after-hours premiums if performed outside of standard operating hours, as these are eligible add-ons to the base fee.
  • If the patient is ASA III, ensure you append the appropriate anaesthesia premium code to maximize the claim, as R885 is eligible for these specific add-ons.
