R944 – Revision and/or repair of AV fistula or graft by angioplasty, patch or graft, and/or segment replacement, with or without thrombectomy
OHIP Radiology Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Revision and/or repair of an arterio-venous (AV) fistula or graft for haemodialysis by angioplasty, patch or graft, and/or segment replacement, with or without thrombectomy. This service includes the revision and/or repair of both the venous and arterial components of the AV fistula or graft, when rendered. As a surgical procedure, it includes all common and specific elements of surgery as defined in the Schedule of Benefits, including pre-operative and post-operative care.
When to Use
- Use R944 when performing a formal surgical revision or segment replacement of an AV fistula or graft, specifically when the procedure involves angioplasty, patch repair, or graft replacement.
- Use this code when the procedure includes a thrombectomy in conjunction with the surgical revision or repair of the AV access site.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing R944 in combination with R941, R942, R943, R945, or R946 on the same day will result in a rejection, as only one code from this series is payable per patient per day.
- Attempting to bill separately for the venous and arterial components of the revision is a common error; R944 is an inclusive code that covers both components when rendered during the same session.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly details the specific repair method (e.g., patch, segment replacement, or angioplasty) to justify the use of R944 over simpler diagnostic or minor procedural codes.
