S151Insertion of feeding enterostomy

OHIP Urology Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

This service covers the surgical insertion of a feeding enterostomy. The fee is for the procedure when performed as the primary operation. If the feeding enterostomy is inserted at the time of another intra-abdominal procedure, fee code E737 should be claimed as an add-on fee instead. This procedure is eligible for surgeon (<suffix>A</suffix>), assistant (<suffix>B</suffix>), and anaesthesia (<suffix>C</suffix>) services with specific base units.

When to Use

  • Use S151 as the primary procedure code when the feeding enterostomy is the sole surgical intervention performed during the operative session.
  • Use S151 for stand-alone surgical placement of a feeding tube where no other intra-abdominal procedures are conducted.

Common Pitfalls

  • Claiming S151 in conjunction with other intra-abdominal procedures will trigger a rejection; you must use E737 as an add-on to the primary procedure instead.
  • Attempting to bill S151 for percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) or radiologically guided tube placements, which are governed by different codes within the Schedule of Benefits.

Billing Tips

  • If the procedure is performed after hours, ensure you append the appropriate premium (E409 or E410) to the base fee of S151 to maximize the claim value.
  • Verify that the surgical assistant and anaesthesiologist are aware of the primary/add-on distinction, as their respective premiums must align with the primary procedure code billed.
