This service is for the surgical repair of an ileostomy or colostomy at the skin level. The fee listed is for the surgeon's professional service. Fees for a surgical assistant and anaesthesiologist are calculated based on basic units plus time units, as specified in the to of the Schedule.
When to Use
- Use S181 for minor local revisions of an existing stoma at the skin level, such as addressing minor mucocutaneous separation or simple stricture dilation that does not require full abdominal exploration.
- Select S181 when the procedure is limited to the superficial stoma site, distinguishing it from more extensive procedures like S182 (stoma revision requiring laparotomy) or S185 (stoma closure).
Common Pitfalls
- Billing S181 alongside E718 is prohibited; ensure you are not attempting to claim a separate tray or minor procedure fee that is already bundled into the surgical fee.
- Attempting to bill for a second surgical assistant without prior approval from a medical consultant will result in automatic rejection, as S181 is not on the pre-approved list for second assistants.
Billing Tips
- If the procedure is performed after hours, ensure you append the correct premium (E409 or E410) to the surgeon's claim, as these are not automatically calculated and must be submitted as part of the claim string.
