S580 – Plastic reconstruction, urethra
OHIP Urology Code — MALE GENITAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Plastic reconstruction of the urethra. This is a surgical procedure and as such includes the specific elements of surgery as defined in the Schedule of Benefits. This includes preparation for the procedure, the operation itself, and post-operative care until the first post-operative visit. When performed by a medical trainee, the service is eligible for payment to the Supervising Physician subject to the rules outlined in through of the Schedule.
When to Use
- Use S580 for formal plastic reconstruction of the urethra, such as urethroplasty for stricture disease, rather than simple dilation or meatotomy.
- Select S580 when performing complex urethral repair that exceeds the scope of minor procedures like S571 or S572.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing S580 alongside other urethral procedures without clear documentation of distinct, separate surgical sites, which risks rejection for unbundling.
- Failing to document the specific complexity of the reconstruction, which may lead to audit scrutiny if the procedure is deemed equivalent to a less intensive code.
- Attempting to bill a second surgical assistant without prior authorization, as S580 is not on the pre-approved list for multiple assistants.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report explicitly details the reconstructive technique used to justify the S580 fee over simpler urethral codes.
- If the procedure is non-elective and performed after hours, append E409A or E410A to the S580 claim to capture the appropriate procedural premium.
