S582
S582 – Repair of penile fracture or traumatic laceration of corpus cavernosum
OHIP Urology Code · Schedule of Benefits
Repair of penile fracture or traumatic laceration of corpus cavernosum
When to Use
- Use S582 for the surgical management of a ruptured tunica albuginea following blunt trauma to the erect penis.
- Use S582 when performing an emergent evacuation of a penile hematoma associated with a corpus cavernosum laceration.
- Use S582 for cases requiring concurrent urethral repair during the surgical exploration and closure of a penile fracture.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill S580 separately for urethral repair, as it is explicitly included in the S582 fee.
- Avoid billing for hematoma evacuation as a separate procedure, as it is considered an integral component of the S582 service.
- Failure to recognize that S582 has zero post-op care days means all subsequent follow-up visits must be billed as office visits rather than assuming they are covered by the surgical fee.
Billing Tips
- If the procedure is performed after-hours in a non-ED setting, ensure you append the appropriate premium code (E409 or E410) to maximize the 50% or 75% increase.
- If a secondary unrelated procedure is performed under the same anesthesia, ensure the major procedure is billed at 100% and the secondary procedure is reduced to 85% per the multiple procedure rule.
