X338
X338 – Placement of rectal spacer
OHIP Laboratory Code · Schedule of Benefits
Placement of rectal spacer, including any imaging or other guidance required and including sigmoidoscopy or proctoscopy if performed.
When to Use
- Use X338 when performing the insertion of a hydrogel rectal spacer to reduce radiation dose to the rectum during prostate radiotherapy.
- Use this code specifically when the procedure is performed as a distinct intervention separate from the global radiation treatment planning process.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing X338 in conjunction with any radiation treatment planning codes X310, X311, X312, or X313 will result in an automatic rejection as these are mutually exclusive for the same course of treatment.
- Attempting to bill separately for ultrasound or CT guidance used during the spacer placement will lead to claim rejection, as all imaging is considered bundled into the X338 fee.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the clinical documentation clearly distinguishes the spacer placement from the radiation planning session to avoid audit flags regarding the global fee restriction.
