Z140
Z140 – Drainage of intramammary abscess or haematoma
OHIP Psychiatric Code — INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Drainage of a single or multiloculated intramammary abscess or haematoma, performed under local anaesthetic.
When to Use
- Use Z140 for the incision and drainage of a localized breast abscess or hematoma requiring local anesthetic in an office or clinic setting.
- Use Z140 when the procedure involves a single or multiloculated collection that is distinct from a simple aspiration (Z139) or more complex surgical excision (Z141).
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z140 in addition to a minor assessment code (A007) is often rejected; ensure the assessment is for a separate, unrelated clinical issue if billing both.
- Confusing Z140 with Z139 (aspiration of breast cyst/abscess); Z140 requires an incision and drainage, whereas Z139 is limited to needle aspiration.
Billing Tips
- If the procedure is performed after hours in a non-emergency setting, ensure you append the appropriate E409 or E410 premium to the Z140 fee to maximize reimbursement.
