Z175Repair of laceration, 5.1 to 10 cm

OHIP Psychiatric Code — INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

This service is for the repair of a laceration between 5.1 and 10.0 cm in length. It is distinct from Z177, which is used for lacerations of the same size if they are on the face and/or require tying of bleeders and/or closure in layers. For complex laceration repairs requiring a minimum of 20 minutes and meeting specific criteria, see Z187 (face) or Z188 (other anatomical areas).

When to Use

  • Use Z175 for a simple, single-layer closure of a 5.1 to 10.0 cm laceration on the trunk or extremities.
  • Select Z175 when the repair does not meet the complexity criteria for Z177 (which requires facial location, layered closure, or vessel ligation) or Z188 (which requires 20+ minutes of complex repair).
  • Use Z175 for standard suturing; note that if you use tissue adhesives like cyanoacrylate, you must bill at 50% of the Z175 fee.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing Z175 for a facial laceration; facial repairs of this length must be billed under Z177, which carries a higher fee.
  • Failing to document the exact length of the laceration in centimeters, which is the primary audit trigger for verifying the use of Z175 over Z176 (2.6-5.0 cm) or Z179 (10.1-15.0 cm).
  • Attempting to bill Z175 alongside a minor assessment code (A007) for the same visit; the assessment is generally considered included in the surgical procedure unless a separate, unrelated problem is addressed.

Billing Tips

  • If performing this procedure in your office, ensure you add the appropriate office setting premium (E542) to the Z175 claim to capture the additional overhead.
  • If the repair is non-elective and performed after hours (17:00-24:00 weekdays or anytime weekends/holidays), apply the 50% Surgeon After Hours Premium, provided you are not the Emergency Department physician.
Provider Fee$39.35
