Repair of a laceration measuring 10.1 cm to 15 cm. This fee is applicable if the laceration is on the face, and/or requires tying of bleeders, and/or requires closure in layers. This is a surgical procedure listed in the Integumentary System section of the Schedule of Benefits.
When to Use
- Use Z190 for a single laceration measuring 10.1 cm to 15 cm that requires layered closure or involves the face.
- Use Z190 when the procedure involves tying of bleeders, even if the laceration length is at the lower end of the 10.1 cm to 15 cm range.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z190 if using tissue adhesives (e.g., Dermabond), as this triggers a mandatory 50% reduction of the fee.
- Avoid billing Z190 for multiple separate lacerations; the total length of all lacerations does not aggregate to qualify for a higher code unless they are part of a single complex repair.
- Do not bill Z190 in conjunction with a minor assessment code (e.g., A007) on the same day, as the assessment is considered included in the surgical procedure fee.
