Z363Removal of thoracostomy tube (chest tube)

OHIP Psychiatric Code — RESPIRATORY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Removal of a thoracostomy tube, also known as a chest tube. As an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP), there are specific rules regarding billing assessments on the same day. Payment for Z363 is not eligible for the same patient on the same day as Z341 (Tube thoracostomy for closed drainage).

When to Use

  • Use Z363 for the routine removal of a chest tube following the resolution of a pneumothorax or pleural effusion.
  • Use Z363 when the chest tube was inserted during a previous encounter and the current visit is solely for the removal procedure.

Common Pitfalls

  • Do not bill Z363 on the same day as Z341, as the Ministry considers the removal part of the global surgical package for the insertion.
  • Avoid billing a concurrent office visit (e.g., A007) on the same day as Z363, as the procedural fee is intended to cover the assessment required for the removal.

Billing Tips

  • If the removal occurs after hours or on weekends, ensure you append the appropriate premium (E409 or E410) to the Z363 claim to maximize the procedural value.
