When to Use
- Use Z513 when performing balloon dilatation of a benign colonic stricture (e.g., anastomotic stricture) during a colonoscopy.
- Use this code for pneumatic dilatation of a stricture where the primary intent is to increase the luminal diameter to resolve obstruction or facilitate passage.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z513 in addition to a diagnostic colonoscopy code (e.g., Z571) as the procedure is considered inclusive of the endoscopic access.
- Avoid billing Z513 if the stricture management involved only biopsy or simple removal of tissue, as those are covered by different surgical codes.
