Z602Catheterization - office

OHIP Psychiatric Code — UROGENITAL AND URINARY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

This service is for a urinary catheterization performed in an office setting. According to the note on page , it is only eligible for payment for: - acute retention, - change of Foley catheter or suprapubic tube, or - instillation of medication. This service is not payable in addition to Z610 (Intravesical instillation for bladder cancer).

When to Use

  • Use Z602 when performing an urgent catheterization for a patient presenting with acute urinary retention.
  • Use Z602 for routine scheduled changes of an existing Foley catheter or suprapubic tube in the office.
  • Use Z602 when performing the instillation of medication into the bladder, provided it is not for bladder cancer treatment.

Common Pitfalls

  • Do not bill Z602 alongside Z610, as the Ministry explicitly prohibits concurrent billing for these procedures.
  • Avoid billing Z602 for routine diagnostic catheterization or simple specimen collection, as these do not meet the three strictly defined clinical criteria.
  • Ensure the procedure is performed in an office setting; billing Z602 for hospital-based procedures may result in rejection or audit.

Billing Tips

  • If the procedure is performed after hours for a non-elective indication, remember to append E409 or E410 to increase the procedural fee.
  • Always document the specific clinical indication (e.g., 'acute retention' or 'Foley change') in the chart to justify the use of Z602 during a potential audit.
