E130 – Iridectomy - surgical - when sole procedure
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — OCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
An iridectomy is the surgical removal of a piece of the iris tissue. This fee code, E130, applies when the iridectomy is performed as a standalone surgical procedure. The fee for surgical assistance is based on 6 base units plus time units, and the fee for anaesthesia is based on 6 base units plus time units, as detailed in the General Preamble (, ).
When to Use
- Use E130 when performing a peripheral iridectomy as the sole surgical procedure to treat acute angle-closure glaucoma.
- Use E130 for a surgical iridectomy performed as an isolated procedure during cataract surgery if the primary cataract code does not include the iridectomy in its description.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E130 in conjunction with other ocular procedures will result in automatic rejection, as it is strictly defined as a sole procedure code.
- Attempting to bill E130 when a laser iridotomy (E131) was actually performed will trigger an audit, as these are distinct procedural modalities.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report explicitly states that no other surgical procedures were performed during the same session to justify the 'sole procedure' requirement.
