A combined surgical procedure involving both a glaucoma filtering procedure and a cataract extraction performed on the same eye. This service is eligible for add-on codes for specific circumstances such as the insertion of an intraocular lens (E950), if it follows a previous glaucoma filtering procedure (E984), or if it includes the intraocular implant of a seton (E136).
When to Use
- Use E214 when performing a combined trabeculectomy and phacoemulsification with IOL implantation in the same surgical session.
- Select E214 instead of separate billing for cataract extraction (E132) and glaucoma filtering when both are completed as a single combined procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E214 alongside separate glaucoma or cataract codes will trigger a rejection for duplicate service or unbundling.
- Failing to append the required add-on code E950 when an intraocular lens is inserted results in under-billing for the full scope of the procedure.
