Meatoplasty or canalplasty for congenital malformation. This is a surgical procedure for which surgeon, assistant, and anaesthetist services are payable. Additional procedures can be billed as add-ons: E955 for grafting of the canal, and E956 for tympanoplasty and/or ossiculoplasty, and/or mastoidectomy.
When to Use
- Use E314 for the surgical correction of congenital aural atresia or stenosis involving meatoplasty or canalplasty.
- Use E314 as the primary base code when performing canal reconstruction that requires concurrent grafting (E955) or tympanoplasty/mastoidectomy (E956).
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E955 or E956 as standalone codes; they are strictly add-ons and will be rejected unless billed on the same claim as E314.
- Attempting to bill a hospital admission assessment by the surgeon for the procedure, which is disallowed under the surgical preamble unless it qualifies as the major pre-operative consultation.
Billing Tips
- Always apply the appropriate age-based surgical premium to the surgeon (suffix A) and assistant (suffix B) fees, as E314 is a surgical procedure in the Y-category.
- Ensure that if E956 is billed, the surgical report clearly documents the specific components performed (tympanoplasty, ossiculoplasty, or mastoidectomy) to support the flat fee add-on.
