When to Use
- Use as an add-on code when performing posterior spinal arthrodesis of C1/C2 with screw fixation (transarticular, pedicle, or lateral mass) during a primary procedure such as N509, N510, N560, N561, or N572.
- Use when specifically performing the C1/C2 fixation component of a more extensive cervical spinal fusion procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Claiming E384 as a standalone procedure; it is strictly an add-on and will be rejected if not billed with one of the specified primary codes.
- Incorrectly billing E370 in conjunction with E384, which will trigger an automatic reduction of E370 to the lower-valued E366.
- Attempting to claim E366, E371, or E377 for the C1/C2 level itself; these codes are reserved for additional levels beyond the primary E384 fixation.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the primary procedure (e.g., N509) and the add-on E384 are submitted on the same claim to avoid rejection.
- When fusing additional levels beyond C1/C2, select the appropriate add-on (E366 for standard levels, E371 for occiput, or E377 for cervico-thoracic junction) to ensure correct reimbursement.
