E370 is for a posterior spinal arthrodesis with instrumentation for one disc level. It is performed by the same surgeon as the primary procedure and billed in addition to it. It applies in two contexts as per the Schedule of Benefits: 1. **Cervical Spine (below ):** Performed in addition to decompression procedures N509, N510, N572, N574, N575, N576, N560, or N561. 2. Thoracic & Lumbar Spine: Performed in addition to decompression or osteotomy procedures N509, N510, N511, N512, N572, N574, N575, N576, N560, or N561. Additional fused levels are claimed using other codes such as E366.
When to Use
- Use E370 when performing a posterior spinal arthrodesis with instrumentation at a single level following a cervical decompression procedure such as N509 or N510.
- Use E370 for a single-level thoracic or lumbar fusion performed in conjunction with a decompression procedure like N511 or N512.
- Use E370 as the primary code for the first level of fusion when multiple levels are addressed, provided the additional levels are claimed using E366.
Common Pitfalls
- Claiming E370 alongside E384 will trigger an automatic reduction to E366, resulting in a lower fee payment.
- Attempting to claim E370 for additional levels beyond the first; all subsequent levels must be billed using the appropriate add-on codes like E366.
- Billing E370 without an eligible primary decompression or osteotomy procedure code, which will lead to a rejection for missing the required base procedure.
