E401B – Nights - surgical assistant premium
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — GENERAL PREAMBLE · Schedule of Benefits
A premium for surgical assistants that increases the total assistant's fee by 75% when a surgical case commences during the night (00:00h to 07:00h). The total assistant's fee is calculated by adding the basic units and time units for the procedure and multiplying by the unit fee, as described in the Surgical Assistants' Services section of the Schedule on .
When to Use
- Use E401B when a surgical case commences between 00:00h and 07:00h, regardless of whether the surgery was scheduled or emergent.
- Apply this premium to the total calculated assistant fee (basic units plus time units) when providing assistance during the specified night hours.
Common Pitfalls
- A common error is failing to apply the 75% increase to the total fee (basic + time units) rather than just the base fee.
- Do not confuse E401B with the special visit premium C999B; E401B is a percentage-based premium for the procedure itself, while C999B is a flat-fee premium for the travel/visit component.
Billing Tips
- Always bill E401B in conjunction with the appropriate surgical assistant fee code and, if applicable, the C999B special visit premium to maximize the claim value for night-time surgery.
