E718
E718 – Bowel resection following previous resection with anastomosis
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
When to Use
- Use E718 when performing a bowel resection on a patient who has previously undergone a bowel resection with anastomosis, specifically as a secondary or revision procedure.
- Use E718 following the performance of S217, S213, S214, or S215 to account for the increased complexity of operating on previously resected bowel segments.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill E718 in conjunction with S181, S182, S185, S191, S192, or S193 as these are explicitly restricted by the Schedule of Benefits.
- Avoid using E718 for primary bowel resections; it is strictly intended for cases involving prior surgical history as defined in the code description.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly documents the previous anastomosis or the specific reference to S213-S217 to justify the use of this code over a standard resection code.
