E802
E802 – Biopsy or fine needle aspiration
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
When to Use
- Use E802 when performing a fine needle aspiration (FNA) or core biopsy on a specific target lesion during an endoscopic ultrasound procedure (S236 or S237).
- Apply this code for each distinct pass or sample taken from a single lesion, up to the maximum of three times per lesion.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing more than three units of E802 per lesion will result in automatic rejection; ensure you track the number of passes per specific anatomical site.
- Attempting to bill E802 as a standalone procedure without an associated primary endoscopic ultrasound code (e.g., S236 or S237) will lead to claim rejection.
- Confusing E802 with other biopsy codes; ensure the procedure was specifically performed via echo-endoscope as defined in the digestive system surgical section.
Billing Tips
- If you sample multiple distinct lesions, you may bill up to three units of E802 for each separate lesion, provided each is clearly documented in the procedure report.
- Always ensure the primary procedure code (S236 or S237) is submitted on the same claim as E802 to satisfy the add-on requirement.
