S237 – Linear or radial echo-endoscope - including biliary or pancreatic examination
OHIP Urology Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Performance of an endoscopic ultrasound using a linear or radial echo-endoscope. This service specifically includes the examination of the biliary and/or pancreatic systems. The scope used for this procedure is also suitable for therapeutic purposes.
When to Use
- Use S237 when performing endoscopic ultrasound specifically targeting the biliary or pancreatic systems, regardless of whether a radial or linear scope is utilized.
- Use S237 for diagnostic EUS procedures where the primary objective is the visualization of pancreatic masses or biliary ductal pathology.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing S237 in conjunction with a standard upper GI endoscopy (e.g., gastroscopy) will result in a zero-dollar payment for the endoscopy unless you provide explicit clinical justification for why the echo-endoscope provided limited visualization.
- Attempting to bill S236 and S237 together is prohibited; the Ministry will pay zero for S236 when both are submitted on the same claim.
- Failing to document the specific number of lesions when claiming the E802 add-on, which is strictly capped at a maximum of 3 per lesion.
Billing Tips
- Always append the appropriate add-on codes (E802, E803, E804, or E805) to the S237 claim to capture the full value of therapeutic interventions performed during the same session.
- If performing a biopsy or FNA, ensure the E802 code is submitted for each lesion (up to 3) to maximize the procedural reimbursement.
