E887
E887 – Resection of pituitary lesion(s) extending beyond the sella turcica
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — NEUROLOGICAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
When to Use
- Use E887 when the pituitary lesion resection involves suprasellar extension requiring dissection of the optic chiasm or optic nerves.
- Use E887 when the tumor involves the hypothalamus, necessitating extension of the surgical field beyond the sella turcica during an N111 or N114 procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E887 without a primary N111 or N114 procedure will result in automatic rejection.
- Claiming E887 for intrasellar tumors that do not demonstrate clear extension to the specified anatomical structures (optic nerve, chiasm, or hypothalamus) is an audit risk.
- Attempting to bill E887 alongside restricted procedures from the Respiratory or Integumentary sections will cause claim rejection.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report explicitly details the suprasellar extension and the specific involvement of the optic chiasm or hypothalamus to support the add-on fee.
- Apply age premiums or after-hours premiums (E409/E410) to the combined total of the primary procedure and the E887 add-on fee where applicable.
