OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Performs a wet preparation of a specimen for microscopic examination to detect fungus, trichomonas, or parasites. This service is included as a component of the monthly management fee (W010) for patients in a nursing home or home for the aged and is not separately payable in that context. As per , this is considered a simple office laboratory procedure that can be delegated to a physician's employee under specific conditions.
When to Use
- Use G012 when performing a microscopic examination of a vaginal discharge specimen to confirm a clinical suspicion of Trichomonas vaginalis or candidiasis in an office setting.
- Use G012 for the microscopic identification of parasites or fungal elements from skin scrapings or other clinical specimens when the procedure is performed by you or your delegated staff.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G012 on the same day as K013, K040, K033, or K041 will result in an automatic rejection because G012 is not an approved concurrent service with counselling codes.
- Submitting G012 for patients enrolled in a nursing home or home for the aged is a common audit error, as this service is bundled into the W010 monthly management fee.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your clinical notes explicitly document the microscopic findings, as G012 is a diagnostic procedure that requires evidence of the examination performed to justify the fee.
