Optokinetic testing is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate balance function. As an insured service, it includes all common and specific constituent elements as defined in the Schedule of Benefits. Unlike some other diagnostic balance tests, this service is claimed with a single fee and is not split into technical and professional components.
When to Use
- Use G191 when performing specific optokinetic nystagmus testing to evaluate oculomotor function in patients with suspected vestibular or neurological pathology.
- Select G191 for objective assessment of visual-vestibular interaction when standard clinical bedside exams like G815 or G816 are insufficient to localize the deficit.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G191 in conjunction with other diagnostic vestibular codes like G104 or G105 for the same patient encounter often triggers a rejection for unbundling.
- Submitting G191 without a valid referral from a physician or nurse practitioner as required by GP111 will result in automatic claim rejection.
Billing Tips
- G191 is a standalone procedure fee; do not attempt to add technical or professional component modifiers as the code is inclusive of all elements.
