Insertion of an oesophageal transducer is a diagnostic procedure. This service includes all common elements as defined in the Schedule of Benefits, such as obtaining patient history, performing the procedure, and record-keeping. For detailed clinical guidance, physicians should refer to 'The Provision of Echocardiography in Canada' guidelines by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and the Canadian Society of Echocardiography as noted on page of the Schedule.
When to Use
- Use G580 when performing an intraoperative or diagnostic transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) to guide cardiac assessment.
- Bill this code when the oesophageal transducer is inserted specifically to monitor cardiac function or anatomy during a procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not attempt to bill after-hours premiums (E409, E410, E412, E413) with G580, as it is not classified as a Major Invasive Procedure.
- Avoid billing G580 in isolation if a saline study (G579) was performed during the same session, as G579 is an eligible add-on code.
Billing Tips
- Always append G579 to your claim if a saline study was conducted during the TEE to maximize the total procedure value.
