The professional component of a transoesophageal echocardiography service. This represents the physician's interpretation and report for the procedure. The corresponding technical component is listed as G582A (see :). A permanent record of study images and loops must be maintained on an appropriate dynamic medium, either videotape or digitally (see :).
When to Use
- Use G581 to bill for the professional interpretation and reporting of a transoesophageal echocardiogram when the technical component is billed separately under G582A.
- Apply this code when performing a transoesophageal echocardiogram to evaluate cardiac structures or thrombi that are poorly visualized on a standard transthoracic study (G571 or G574).
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G581 without a corresponding G582A technical fee can lead to claim rejections or audit inquiries regarding the completeness of the procedure.
- Failure to maintain a permanent digital or video record of the study as mandated by Section J25 is a frequent cause for clawbacks during OHIP audits.
