J715PET – Cardiology, excluding myocardial perfusion

OHIP Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Code · Schedule of Benefits

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan for cardiology indications, excluding myocardial perfusion. This service is used for cardiology-related PET imaging, including the investigation of cardiac-related infection or inflammation.

When to Use

  • Use J715 when performing a PET scan specifically to investigate cardiac sarcoidosis or suspected cardiac device-related infection.
  • Use J715 for cardiac inflammation assessments where J717 is explicitly excluded due to the cardiac-specific nature of the pathology.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing J715 for myocardial perfusion studies, which must be billed under J900 instead.
  • Attempting to bill J715 alongside J717 for the same patient on the same day, which will trigger a rejection due to the daily limit on the PET scan group.
  • Billing for the interpretation of the CT component of a PET/CT scan separately, as this is considered an included element of the J715 service.

Billing Tips

  • Apply the 30% professional benefit increase using the appropriate Y-prefix code if you perform advanced quantification or data manipulation that provides diagnostic information beyond visual inspection.
  • Ensure the technical component (suffix B) is not claimed if the patient is a hospital inpatient or admitted within 24 hours for the same condition.
