J899Sleep study between 1 and 4 hours

OHIP Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Represents an incomplete overnight sleep study where the recording does not contain information sufficient for a diagnostic interpretation, as determined in accordance with generally accepted standards set out by the CPSO. This code is applicable when the total study time (time in bed) is between 1 and 4 hours. This service is not included in the usage limits for complete overnight sleep studies.

When to Use

  • Use J899 when a patient terminates a sleep study prematurely due to discomfort or technical failure, resulting in a total 'time in bed' between 1 and 4 hours.
  • Use this code when the recorded data is insufficient for a formal diagnostic interpretation under CPSO standards, provided the study duration falls within the 1 to 4-hour window.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing J899 when the study duration exceeds 4 hours, which would instead require the use of J898 or J990.
  • Submitting J899 when the study produced a valid diagnostic report; this code is strictly for incomplete or non-diagnostic studies.
  • Attempting to bill J899 in addition to a complete study (J898/J990) within the same 12-month period, as the system limits payment to only one of these codes per patient per facility annually.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the exact 'time in bed' is clearly noted in the technical report to justify the 1-4 hour duration requirement and prevent audit rejections.

The determination that the recording does not contain sufficient information for a diagnostic interpretation must be made in accordance with generally accepted standards as set out in the CPSO Standards.

As the service is defined by its duration, the total study time (time in bed) must be documented in the medical record to justify the use of this code over J898 or J990.

A maximum of one of any of J898, J899 and J990 is eligible for payment, per patient, per facility, per 12 month period.

J898, J899 and J990 are not included in the limits for overnight studies set out below.
