J898Sleep study less than 1 hour

OHIP Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

An incomplete overnight sleep study is payable when the recording does not contain information sufficient for a diagnostic interpretation, as determined in accordance with generally accepted standards set out by the CPSO. J898 is specifically for studies with a total duration (time in bed) of less than 1 hour. This service, along with J899 and J990, is not included in the lifetime limits for initial diagnostic overnight sleep studies.

When to Use

  • Use J898 when a patient terminates the sleep study prematurely due to equipment intolerance or anxiety, resulting in less than 60 minutes of recorded data.
  • Use J898 when technical failure or power loss occurs early in the study, preventing the collection of sufficient data for a diagnostic report.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing J898 when the study duration exceeds 60 minutes; if the duration is between 1 and 6 hours, J899 must be used instead.
  • Attempting to claim a special visit premium alongside J898, which is strictly prohibited under the Schedule of Benefits.
  • Failing to document the specific reason for the study termination, which is required to justify why a full diagnostic study (J896) was not completed.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the total 'time in bed' is clearly documented in the clinical record to support the use of J898 over J899 or J896.
