If a sleep study recording does not contain information sufficient for a diagnostic interpretation as determined in accordance with generally accepted standards as set out in the CPSO Standards, the professional fee is not eligible for payment and the service constitutes an incomplete study. J990 is payable when the total study time is more than 4 hours. This service is not included in the limits for complete overnight studies.
When to Use
- Use J990 when a patient undergoes an overnight sleep study that lasts longer than 4 hours but fails to yield diagnostic data due to technical issues or patient intolerance.
- Use J990 instead of J898 or J899 when the study is deemed incomplete per CPSO standards despite meeting the minimum 4-hour recording duration.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing J990 when the total study time is 4 hours or less, which will result in an automatic rejection as the code strictly requires more than 4 hours.
- Attempting to claim a special visit premium alongside J990, which is explicitly prohibited by the Schedule of Benefits.
- Submitting J990 more than once per patient, per facility, per 12-month period, as this code is subject to the same annual frequency limit as J898 and J899.
