When to Use
- Use L810 for the laboratory analysis of synovial fluid aspirated from a joint when performing a diagnostic arthrocentesis.
- Use L810 when analyzing pleural or ascitic fluid samples sent to the lab for diagnostic evaluation following a therapeutic or diagnostic tap.
- Use L810 for the analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples when laboratory testing is required beyond standard automated counts.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L810 in conjunction with G372 or G373 for the same procedure, as the laboratory analysis is often considered inclusive of the professional fee for the aspiration.
- Avoid billing L810 for routine urinalysis, as specific codes like L801 are designated for standard urine laboratory testing.
- Billing L810 for simple visual inspection without formal laboratory processing or reporting will trigger an audit rejection for lack of diagnostic service.
