A minor nerve graft involving a sensory or cutaneous nerve. Payment for this service is subject to the following rules: - The fee for N183 includes any exploration, decompression, division, excision, and/or neurolysis of the involved nerve(s), if performed. - Nerve graft fees, including N183, include the harvesting of the nerve(s) required for the graft. - Peripheral nerve fee codes, including N183, include any guidance, nerve stimulation, or nerve mapping if performed.
When to Use
- Use N183 when performing a sensory or cutaneous nerve graft, such as a sural nerve harvest and interposition graft for a digital nerve deficit.
- Use this code for minor nerve repairs involving grafting where the primary procedure is the reconstruction of a sensory nerve branch.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill separately for the harvest of the donor nerve, as the fee for N183 is all-inclusive of the procurement process.
- Avoid billing additional codes for neurolysis or exploration of the same nerve, as these are explicitly bundled into N183 according to the Schedule of Benefits.
- Do not attempt to bill for intraoperative nerve stimulation or mapping, as these services are considered part of the N183 procedural fee.

- Ensure your operative report clearly documents the sensory or cutaneous nature of the nerve to justify the use of N183 over more complex motor nerve graft codes.
