This procedure involves the surgical suturing of a major nerve. For billing purposes, a major nerve is defined as a mixed sensory and motor nerve, or a pure motor nerve. The fee for the surgeon is a flat rate, while fees for the assistant and anaesthetist are calculated based on basic and time units. This service is eligible for various add-on premiums, including for the use of an operating microscope (E906) and for repeat or delayed procedures (E925).
When to Use
- Use N287 for the primary repair of a major mixed sensory-motor or pure motor peripheral nerve via direct suture.
- Use N287 when performing a delayed repair of a major nerve injury occurring more than 4 weeks post-trauma, ensuring E925 is also billed.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing N287 for minor cutaneous sensory nerve repairs, which are not considered major nerves under the OHIP definition.
- Failing to document the use of an operating microscope in the operative report, which leads to automatic rejection of the E906 add-on premium.
- Incorrectly applying E925 for acute nerve repairs performed within 4 weeks of injury unless the procedure is a repeat of a previous attempt.
