N184
N184 – Decompression of posterior tibial or common peroneal nerve
OHIP Otolaryngology Code — NEUROLOGICAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Decompression of the posterior tibial or common peroneal nerve. As per the Neurological Surgical Procedures section, this service may include exploration, division, excision, biopsy, neurolysis and/or transposition of the nerve.
When to Use
- Use N184 for the surgical release of tarsal tunnel syndrome involving the posterior tibial nerve.
- Use N184 for the decompression of the common peroneal nerve at the fibular head, typically performed for nerve entrapment or compression neuropathy.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing N184 alongside other neurolysis codes for the same nerve segment; the code description already encompasses neurolysis, making additional claims redundant and subject to audit.
- Failing to append the E906 premium when an operating microscope is utilized, as this is a distinct, billable add-on for peripheral nerve procedures.
Billing Tips
- Always document the use of an operating microscope in the operative report to substantiate the E906 40% premium claim.
- If performing a repeat decompression on the same nerve, ensure E925 is applied to capture the 30% repeat procedure premium.
