Surgical procedure for the transplantation of a kidney. Per the note on , claims for this service must be submitted under the recipient's health number. The fee for S435 does not include immunosuppressive therapy, which is payable on a fee-for-service basis.
When to Use
- Use S435 for the primary surgical procedure of a kidney transplant performed on the recipient.
- Use S435 in conjunction with E762 when a renal artery reconstruction or repair is performed during the same operative session.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing the team fee E769 while simultaneously billing for a surgical assistant (S435B); these are mutually exclusive.
- Submitting the claim under the donor's health number instead of the recipient's health number, which will result in an automatic rejection.
- Failing to bill immunosuppressive therapy as a separate fee-for-service claim, as it is not included in the S435 base fee.
Billing Tips
- Ensure that if an assistant is utilized, the service is submitted with the 'B' suffix (S435B) to trigger the correct assistant fee calculation based on base and time units.
- Verify that the anaesthesia service is submitted with the 'C' suffix (S435C) and include any applicable extra units for high ASA physical status or high BMI to optimize the anaesthetic fee.
