S436 – Donor nephrectomy
OHIP Urology Code — UROGENITAL AND URINARY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
S436 is for a donor nephrectomy, either unilateral or bilateral, including renal perfusion with hypothermia when rendered by the surgeon. Claims must be submitted on the recipient's health number as per the note on :. It is eligible for add-on premiums E753 for a live donor and E792 for laparoscopic performance. The fee is payable with suffixes A (surgeon), B (assistant), and C (anaesthetist).
When to Use
- Use S436 for the surgical removal of a kidney from a living donor intended for transplantation into a recipient.
- Use S436 when performing the nephrectomy procedure, which explicitly includes the renal perfusion with hypothermia component if performed by the surgeon.
Common Pitfalls
- Submitting the claim under the donor's health number instead of the recipient's health number, which is a mandatory requirement for this code.
- Failing to include the E753 live donor premium when applicable, or incorrectly assuming it is bundled into the base S436 fee.
Billing Tips
- Always append E792 to the claim if the nephrectomy is performed laparoscopically to secure the 25% increase on the surgeon's fee.
- Ensure the recipient's health number is used for all associated surgical assistant (suffix B) and anaesthetist (suffix C) claims to maintain consistency with the primary S436 submission.
