Z506 is for the drainage of an oral abscess or haematoma. As per the section note on page , this service is noted to include the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx unless otherwise specified.
When to Use
- Use Z506 for the incision and drainage of a peritonsillar abscess in the office or emergency department setting.
- Use Z506 when evacuating a sublingual or buccal haematoma resulting from minor trauma or post-procedural complication.
- Use Z506 for drainage of an abscess located specifically within the oropharyngeal or hypopharyngeal tissues.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z506 if the procedure is simply an aspiration; the code specifically requires drainage of an abscess or haematoma.
- Avoid billing Z506 in conjunction with a general assessment code (A007) for the same encounter, as the assessment is considered included in the surgical procedure fee.
- Do not confuse Z506 with Z510 or Z501, which cover different anatomical sites or more extensive surgical interventions.
