Z608
Z608 – Manual catheter declotting and irrigation of bladder
OHIP Psychiatric Code — UROGENITAL AND URINARY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Manual catheter declotting and irrigation of bladder.
When to Use
- Use Z608 when you must manually clear a blocked urinary catheter using syringe irrigation to remove blood clots or debris, specifically when the blockage prevents normal drainage.
- Use this code for bedside manual declotting procedures; do not use it if a formal cystoscopy or more complex urological intervention (such as Z602 or Z603) is required to clear the bladder.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z608 in addition to a consultation or assessment fee (A-prefix) if the irrigation is the primary reason for the visit, as the procedure fee is intended to cover the service.
- Avoid billing Z608 if you are simply performing a routine catheter change; Z608 is strictly for the manual declotting and irrigation of an existing, obstructed catheter.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your documentation explicitly notes the presence of clots or debris requiring manual intervention, as this distinguishes the procedure from a standard, non-billable catheter flush.
- If the procedure is performed in an Emergency Department setting, ensure you append the appropriate Special Visit Premium (Table I) if the criteria for an emergency visit are met.
