E003 – Supportive care/Monitoring
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — SUPPORTIVE CARE/MONITORING BY SURGICAL ASSISTANT OR ANAESTHESIOLOGIST · Schedule of Benefits
Supportive care or monitoring by the surgical assistant or anaesthesiologist includes: 1. Being in constant attendance at a surgical procedure for the sole purpose of monitoring the condition of the patient (including appropriate physical examination and inquiry) and being immediately available to provide, and including the provision of, special supportive care to the patient. 2. Discussion with, and providing advice and information, including prescribing therapy to the patient or the patient’s representative, whether by telephone or otherwise, on matters related to the service and, in circumstances in which it would be professionally appropriate that results can be reported upon prior to any further patient visit, the results of related procedure(s) and/or assessment(s). 3. Providing premises, equipment, supplies, and personnel for any aspect(s) of the specific elements of the service that is(are) performed at a place other than the place in which the attendance occurs. Element 2 is included in the service even if no occasion arises for performing it.
When to Use
- Use E003 as the base code for surgical assistant services when no other specific age-based or condition-based premium codes (such as E007C or E018C) apply to the patient.
- Apply this code when you are the primary surgical assistant providing constant attendance and monitoring during a procedure that does not qualify for the specific ASA or patient-status premiums listed in the restricted codes.
Common Pitfalls
- Attempting to bill E003 alongside restricted codes like E010C (BMI > 40) or E022C (ASA III) will result in automatic rejection, as these codes are mutually exclusive.
- Billing E003B for a second assistant is prohibited; this code is strictly for the primary surgical assistant or anaesthesiologist providing the specified supportive care.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your claim includes the primary surgical procedure code, as E003 is a premium/supportive code that cannot be billed in isolation without an associated surgical service.
