E149
E149 – Vitreous injection or aspiration
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — OCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Vitreous injection or aspiration, posterior with needle for culture and/or injection of medication, other than for macular degeneration.
When to Use
- Use E149 for intravitreal antibiotic injections to treat endophthalmitis, as it is specifically excluded for macular degeneration treatments.
- Use E149 when performing a diagnostic vitreous tap to obtain a sample for culture in cases of suspected infectious uveitis.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E149 for anti-VEGF injections for macular degeneration will result in rejection; use the appropriate specific codes for those procedures instead.
- Attempting to claim E175 for a paracentesis performed through the same entry site as the E149 injection will trigger a rejection.
- Submitting a claim for local or topical anaesthesia alongside E149 is ineligible, as these are considered bundled into the procedure fee.
Billing Tips
- Always append E175 if you perform a therapeutic paracentesis at a separate site from the E149 injection to maximize your claim.
- Ensure you bill E023C if you provide formal anaesthesia services beyond simple local infiltration, as these are eligible for separate payment.
