An intravitreal injection of medication into the right eye for the treatment of wet macular degeneration. This procedure may be performed with an add-on for therapeutic paracentesis (E175) if required through a separate site.
When to Use
- Use E187 for the administration of anti-VEGF agents specifically for the right eye in patients diagnosed with wet age-related macular degeneration.
- Use E187 in conjunction with E175 only when a therapeutic paracentesis is performed at a distinct anatomical site from the primary intravitreal injection.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E175 alongside E187 when the paracentesis is performed through the same injection site, which is explicitly prohibited by the Schedule of Benefits.
- Exceeding the 12-injection annual limit without clear documentation of clinical instability, which increases the risk of claim rejection or audit recovery.
- Attempting to bill E003C for anaesthesia services, as this code is strictly restricted when used in association with E187.

E187 is limited to 12 per patient per 12-month period. Services in excess of this limit are only eligible for payment in exceptional circumstances where warranted by clinical conditions. Physicians must document the appropriate clinical indications for services in excess of the limit on the patient's permanent medical record.
Time units and anaesthesia extra units listed on are not eligible for payment with anaesthesia services for E187C.
E003C is not payable for anaesthesia services rendered for E187.
If paracentesis is performed through the same site as E187, E175 is not eligible for payment.
