E319 – Atticotomy
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — Y. Ocular and Aural Surgical Procedures · Schedule of Benefits
Atticotomy is an excisional surgical procedure of the middle ear, listed under the Mastoidectomy subsection in the Schedule of Benefits.
When to Use
- Use E319 when performing a limited surgical exploration or excision of the attic (epitympanum) for cholesteatoma or chronic disease, distinct from a full radical mastoidectomy.
- Use E319 for attic-specific procedures where the extent of the surgery does not meet the criteria for a more extensive mastoidectomy code such as E320 or E322.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E319 in conjunction with a more extensive mastoidectomy code is generally considered unbundling; ensure the procedure is distinct and not a component part of a larger mastoid procedure.
- Failure to document the specific anatomical extent of the attic disease can lead to audit scrutiny if the claim is reviewed against the higher-valued mastoidectomy codes.
Billing Tips
- If the procedure is performed on both ears during the same session, bill the second procedure at 85% of the fee using the appropriate bilateral indicator.
