E620 – Wedge bronchoplasty
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — RESPIRATORY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This is an add-on code payable in addition to the fee for a primary lung excision procedure (M prefix code) when a wedge bronchoplasty is also performed. The fee for E620 is added to the main surgical benefit. It is listed under 'Lungs and Pleura' in the Respiratory Surgical Procedures section of the Schedule of Benefits. According to the schedule, this code may apply to the preceding M prefix excision codes (:).
When to Use
- Use E620 when performing a formal wedge bronchoplasty to reconstruct the bronchial wall specifically in conjunction with a primary lung excision procedure (e.g., lobectomy or segmentectomy).
- Apply this code when the surgical technique involves the excision of a wedge of the bronchial wall and subsequent primary repair to maintain airway patency during a lung resection.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E620 as a standalone procedure will result in rejection, as it is strictly an add-on code that requires a primary M-prefix lung excision code on the same claim.
- Do not bill E620 for simple bronchial closure or standard stump management, as it is intended for complex wedge reconstruction of the airway.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the primary lung excision code (e.g., M144 or M145) is listed first on the claim to ensure the 85% payment adjustment rule is correctly applied to the secondary procedure if applicable.
