E990
E990 – Stent assistance, to N122 or N125
OHIP Surgical Assists Code · Schedule of Benefits
When to Use
- Use E990 when performing stent-assisted coiling of an intracranial aneurysm in conjunction with N122 for anterior circulation or N125 for posterior circulation.
- Apply this code specifically when a stent is deployed to support the coil mass within the aneurysm neck, distinguishing it from flow-diverter deployment under E991.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E990 multiple times when multiple stents are used in the same session is a common audit trigger; it is strictly a flat fee payable only once per operative session.
- Submitting E990 alongside E991 is prohibited, as these are mutually exclusive add-on codes for different endovascular techniques.
- Attempting to bill E990 with any 'N' code other than N122 or N125 will result in an automatic rejection.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly differentiates the stent-assisted coiling procedure from flow-diverter or intra-saccular device deployment to justify the use of E990 over E991.
