When to Use
- Use E989 when a balloon is utilized to remodel the aneurysm neck during an intracranial endovascular procedure billed under N122 or N125.
- Use E989 when a balloon is kept on standby in the parent vessel to provide proximal flow control during the deployment of coils or other devices in N122 or N125 procedures.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E989 multiple times for multiple balloons used in the same operative session is a common error; it is strictly limited to one unit per N122 or N125 procedure.
- Attempting to bill E989 alongside any 'N' prefix code other than N122 or N125 will result in an automatic rejection due to session restrictions.
- Failing to recognize that E989 is not payable per vessel; it is a flat add-on regardless of how many vessels are treated within the same session.
Billing Tips
- Ensure E989 is linked to the primary N122 or N125 procedure code to avoid claim processing delays.
- You may concurrently bill E990 (stent assistance) or E991 (flow-diverter) alongside E989 if those specific devices are also utilized during the same session.
