F011 – Open reduction of metacarpal fracture
OHIP Anaesthesia Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
A surgical procedure for the open reduction of a metacarpal fracture. This service is billable by the surgeon (suffix A), an assistant (suffix B), and an anaesthesiologist (suffix C). The assistant service has a base unit value of 6, and the anaesthesia service has a base unit value of 7. For each additional metacarpal open reduction, add-on code E559 should be used.
When to Use
- Use F011 for the primary metacarpal fracture requiring open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), reserving E559 for each additional metacarpal bone addressed in the same operative session.
- Select F011 when the fracture is unstable or displaced, necessitating surgical exposure and hardware placement, as opposed to closed reduction codes like F008 or F009.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing F011 multiple times for multiple fractures instead of using one F011 and the appropriate number of E559 add-on units.
- Failing to document the specific metacarpals treated, which is essential for audit purposes when claiming multiple E559 units alongside F011.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the surgical report clearly delineates the work performed on each metacarpal to justify the use of E559 add-on codes in addition to the base F011 fee.
