This service is for the closed reduction of a fracture of the pelvic ring, including rigid external fixation of anterior/posterior pelvic ring and/or percutaneous fixation of anterior pelvic ring. This procedure is eligible for surgeon (suffix A), assistant (suffix B), and anaesthetist (suffix C) services. If no reduction is performed, a standard visit fee (UVC) should be claimed instead. The fee for this procedure includes all common and specific elements of an insured surgical service as outlined in the Schedule of Benefits.
When to Use
- Use F134 when performing a closed reduction of a pelvic ring fracture that requires the application of rigid external fixation.
- Use F134 for cases involving percutaneous fixation of an anterior pelvic ring fracture following a closed reduction maneuver.
- Use F134 for pelvic ring dislocations that are successfully reduced closed, provided the procedure meets the definition of a surgical service.
Common Pitfalls
- Claiming F134 for pelvic ring fractures that are managed conservatively without a reduction maneuver; these must be billed as a standard visit fee (UVC).
- Attempting to bill F134 in conjunction with open reduction codes (e.g., F135) for the same anatomical site, which may trigger a rejection for duplicate or overlapping services.
- Failing to document the specific reduction maneuver performed, which is required to justify the surgical fee over a standard assessment code.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the procedure note clearly specifies that a reduction maneuver was performed, as this is the primary differentiator between F134 and a standard visit fee.
