Administration of the Varicella (VAR) vaccine. This service is an add-on, indicated by the + prefix, typically billed with another service such as an assessment. It can also be billed with G700 if it's the sole purpose of the visit.
Note:
- Where the sole reason for the visit is to provide the immunization service add G700.
- G700 service is only payable once per patient per day.
Commentary:
- The immunization service may not be insured under some conditions. See Appendix A of the Schedule for link to relevant regulation.

When to Use
- Use G848 in conjunction with an assessment code (e.g., A007) when the vaccine is administered during a visit for a separate clinical concern.
- Use G848 paired with G700 when the patient presents exclusively for the Varicella immunization and no other assessment or consultation is performed.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G700 alongside G848 when an assessment code (e.g., A007) is also submitted, which will result in a rejection of the G700 premium.
- Attempting to bill G848 in a hospital setting, which violates the eligibility criteria for the G700 add-on if the immunization is the sole reason for the visit.
- Failing to document the name of the non-physician staff member when the procedure is delegated, as required by GP62/GP63.
Billing Tips
- Ensure G848 is only billed when the vaccine is provided, as it is a procedure-based code rather than a supply code for the vaccine itself.
- If multiple immunizations are administered (e.g., G848 and G840), bill G700 only once as the visit premium, not once per vaccine code.
